Tensile-Tuff® Mesh vs Standard Security Mesh: Why the Difference Matters

If you’ve started collecting quotes for security screens, you’ve probably noticed something: they all sound the same on paper. “Stainless steel mesh.” “Marine grade.” “Meets Australian Standards.” When every brochure uses the same words, how is a homeowner supposed to tell the difference?

The answer is in the details that brochures gloss over — the grade and thickness of the wire, and how that mesh is actually held into the frame. As a licensed Crimsafe manufacturer, we fabricate screens with Tensile-Tuff® mesh at our Kunda Park facility every working day, so we’re well placed to explain exactly what separates it from the standard security mesh used across most of the industry — and why those differences show up when it counts.

Not all “stainless steel mesh” is the same

Here’s the first thing to understand: “stainless steel security mesh” describes a broad category, not a standard of quality. Within that category, meshes vary significantly in three ways:

Steel grade. Tensile-Tuff® mesh is woven from 304-grade stainless steel — a high-tensile structural grade with proven corrosion resistance. Some cheaper screens use lower grades, or aluminium mesh dressed up with security-sounding language. Aluminium in particular is significantly weaker and more prone to tearing under impact.

Wire thickness. Tensile-Tuff® wire is 26% thicker than the standard alternatives used in many competing screens. That may sound incremental; structurally, it isn’t. Thicker high-tensile wire means the mesh absorbs and distributes far more energy before it deforms or tears.

Tensile strength. “High-tensile” means the steel resists stretching and snapping under load. This is the property that lets a Crimsafe screen flex under a massive impact and return to shape, rather than tearing like fabric.

One practical note while we’re on the mesh itself: Tensile-Tuff® mesh comes in black only. It’s the frames and fittings that carry your colour choices — and black mesh actually delivers the clearest outward visibility, which is why it’s the standard across the security screen industry’s premium products.

The weakest point isn’t the mesh — it’s how it’s held

Here’s the insight most buyers never hear: when a security screen fails under attack, it almost never fails in the middle of the mesh. It fails at the edges, where mesh meets frame.

Most standard security screens fix their mesh into the frame using one of two methods:

  • A rubber gasket or spline, which grips the mesh by friction — essentially a heavier-duty version of how a flyscreen is held in
  • Glue or bonding agents, which can degrade over time, particularly in Queensland heat and coastal air


Under a sharp impact — a kick, a shoulder, a jemmy bar — these fixing methods let the mesh pull away from the frame at the point of force. The mesh itself might survive; the screen still fails.

Crimsafe’s answer is the patented Screw-Clamp™ system. Instead of relying on friction or adhesive, the Tensile-Tuff® mesh is mechanically clamped into the frame with screws, so the mesh and frame perform as a single structural unit. Force applied anywhere on the screen is distributed across the entire assembly — there’s no weak edge to exploit.

It’s the combination that matters. Premium mesh in a friction-fit frame still fails at the edge. An excellent frame holding thin mesh still tears in the middle. Tensile-Tuff® mesh plus Screw-Clamp™ fixing is the pairing that produces the test results below.

What the testing actually shows

Australian Standards take the guesswork out of comparing screens — if you know what to look for.

AS5041 sets out the performance tests a security screen must pass: dynamic impact, knife shear, jemmy resistance, pull force, and probe testing. The minimum impact requirement is 100 joules.

Crimsafe Regular withstands 550 joules — more than five times the minimum. Crimsafe Ultimate goes further, reaching 750 joules. These aren’t marketing figures; they’re independently tested results against the published standard.

AS5039 governs manufacture, and every compliant screen carries an AS5039 label fixed directly to the frame. This is worth remembering when comparing quotes: ask to see the label, and ask for the tested impact figures — not just “meets Australian Standards,” which only tells you a product cleared the minimum bar.

Why this matters beyond break-ins

The same engineering that resists an intruder pays off in ways that matter every week on the Sunshine Coast:

Storm and debris resistance. Mesh that absorbs 550+ joules of impact handles wind-borne debris in summer storms far better than standard alternatives.

Fall prevention. The strength of the mesh-and-frame system is what allows Crimsafe screens to satisfy the National Construction Code’s fall prevention requirements on qualifying windows — a genuine safety benefit for families with young children.

Longevity in coastal conditions. 304-grade stainless steel is built for salt air. Lower-grade meshes and aluminium alternatives corrode and weaken over time, which means the screen protecting your home in year ten may be far weaker than the one installed in year one. Tensile-Tuff® mesh doesn’t have that decay curve.
