Crimsafe Safe-S-Cape: The Security Screen Designed as an Emergency Exit

Most security screens keep the outside out. The Crimsafe Safe-S-Cape does that and makes sure you can get out when it matters most.

There’s a tension at the heart of home security that most people don’t think about until they’re forced to.

You want your home secure. You want windows and doors that resist forced entry, that hold firm under pressure, that don’t give way to opportunistic intrusion. You invest in good locks, solid screens, quality products.

And then, in the scenario no one wants to imagine – there’s a fire. And you need to get out. Fast. Through a window that’s been secured to keep people out.

That’s the problem Crimsafe Safe-S-Cape was designed to solve. And it does it in a way that doesn’t compromise the security you’ve put in place to begin with.

What Is the Crimsafe Safe-S-Cape?

The Safe-S-Cape is a Crimsafe security screen window system with a built-in emergency exit mechanism. From the outside, it looks and performs like any other Crimsafe product, the same Tensile-Tuff® stainless steel mesh, the same Screw-Clamp® technology, the same independently tested resistance to forced entry.

From the inside, it’s fundamentally different. A push-button release mechanism allows the screen to be opened quickly and without a key, in either an inward or outward swing direction depending on what suits your home. No fumbling for keys. No tools required. One push, and you’re out.

It’s designed for the moment when every second counts.

Why This Matters More Than Most People Realise

In a house fire, smoke is often the greater danger. It moves fast, fills rooms quickly, and can render a person disoriented and unable to locate a key or operate a complex mechanism within moments of being exposed.

Security screens are fixed on windows and can become an obstacle in exactly this scenario. A window is often the most accessible exit from a bedroom. With a security screen on that window, that screen is a barrier as much as a protection.

The Safe-S-Cape removes that risk. It’s keyless. It’s fast. And it’s designed to be operable under stress – one quick push and you have a clear exit.

For homes with limited escape options this is a meaningful safety consideration.

How the Safe-S-Cape Works

Push-button keyless release From the inside, the locking mechanism releases at a push –  no key, no complex operation. The screen swings open immediately, creating a clear exit path.

Inswing or outswing configuration The Safe-S-Cape can be configured to swing inward or outward depending on your window type and the layout of the room. This flexibility means it can be fitted to suit the actual exit path you’d use in an emergency, not a compromise position.

Full-length integrated hinge Unlike hinges at fixed points on a frame, the Safe-S-Cape uses a full-length integrated hinge along the entire edge of the screen. This eliminates sag over time and significantly increases resistance under attack – a longer hinge line means force is distributed across the whole edge rather than concentrated at hinge points.

Full-length locking stile The locking edge of the screen maintains continuous contact with the frame along its entire length, not just at lock points. This adds structural rigidity and resistance that a standard multi-point lock system can’t replicate.

Screw-Clamp® mesh security The same Tensile-Tuff® 0.9mm 304 structural grade stainless steel mesh and Screw-Clamp® technology used across the Crimsafe range. The mesh is mechanically locked into the frame with tamper-resistant screws, independently tested to exceed AS5039 for impact, knife-shear and jemmy resistance.

Custom made-to-measure Every Safe-S-Cape is fabricated to the exact dimensions of your window opening. There are no standard sizes. The fit is precise, which matters both for security performance and for the aesthetics of the finished product.

Where Should You Install a Safe-S-Cape?

The Safe-S-Cape is a window screen; it’s designed for window openings rather than door applications. The most common and most logical installation positions are:

Bedrooms. Particularly ground floor bedrooms, or any bedroom where the window represents the most accessible exit in an emergency. In a fire scenario, occupants are most likely to be in their bedrooms when a fire starts, and a bedroom window is often the fastest exit route if the hallway is compromised.

Children’s bedrooms. A fixed security screen on a child’s bedroom window creates a real risk in an emergency. A Safe-S-Cape on that window gives parents or the child themselves, if old enough, a fast and keyless exit.

Rooms with limited door access. Any room where the primary door opens onto a corridor that could be compromised by fire or smoke and where the window is effectively the safest alternative exit.

Upper storey windows where egress planning matters. For multi-storey homes, Safe-S-Capes on upper floor windows are part of a considered egress plan, knowing exactly which windows can be opened quickly and without tools in an emergency.

The Security Doesn’t Change

It’s worth being direct about this because it’s the question we hear most often: if the screen can be opened from the inside with a quick push, does that make it less secure from the outside?

No. The push-release mechanism is internal, it’s not accessible or operable from the exterior of the screen. From outside, the Safe-S-Cape behaves exactly like a fixed Crimsafe screen.

The safety features and the security performance exist independently of each other. That’s the engineering achievement that makes this product worth understanding.

A Product That Doesn’t Get Enough Attention

The Safe-S-Cape is one of the less commonly discussed products in the Crimsafe range, partly because it solves a problem most people prefer not to think about, and partly because it doesn’t have the obvious visual appeal of a wide-opening stacker door screen.

But for homes with children, older residents, or anyone who has thought seriously about what they would do in a house fire, it’s one of the most considered and purposeful products Crimsafe makes.

As a licensed Crimsafe manufacturer on the Sunshine Coast, we fabricate and install Safe-S-Cape screens as part of a broader security assessment for your home.
